Prior to 2004 night viewing of Taj Mahal was not allowed. But after that night viewing of the memorial was temporarily permitted for initial 3 months and after its grand success was opened for every 5 days in a month. Rules for Night Visit at Taj Mahal,

Entry to Taj Mahal is strictly prohibited on Fridays, as it is the prayer day of the Muslims. Also during the month of Ramzan visitors are not allowed within the complex. Just 400 people are allowed per day within the Taj complex at night. The tourists are divided into batches of 50 and are permitted for 30 minutes within the premises of Taj Mahal. You can hence explore Taj Mahal and drench in the cool moonlights without much chaos. Tickets need to be booked one day prior to your visit from the office of the Archaeological Survey of India, who are responsible for the maintenance of this historic monument.

For any unavoidable circumstances if you need to cancel the tickets the same is also possible at the office, on the day of visit, with a meagre 25% cancellation charges. Last but not the least; visitors are requested to be at the Shilpgram, which is also the Eastern Gate of Taj Mahal half hour before the visit for security checks.
